1820 Scotland. Amidst the smoke-choked alleys of Glasgow and the untamed beauty of the Highlands, a spellbinding tale of love and rebellion unfolds.

Jane Stuart has lost everything. Her betrothed, her ancestral castle, and her cherished orchard—her life’s work—have all been ripped away. Now, exiled and adrift in the cold fog of Glasgow, she's numb to the weight of her grief, resigned to a desolate future shrouded in loneliness and grey.

But fate has a different plan.

Percy Sommerbell is a musician, a free spirit who holds nothing but disdain for his industrialist father. But when familial duty forces Percy to travel to Scotland, he’s confronted with a painful truth—a truth that threatens to unravel the very fabric of his carefree existence. His family’s money, the fortune that funds his hedonistic enjoyment of all life’s pleasures, is generated by the suffering of children in his father's mills.

In the midst of Glasgow's smoke and shadows, Percy encounters Jane, a mysterious Highland beauty whose sad eyes and luscious curves promise both distraction from his guilt and inspiration for his music. Against all reason, Jane falls under Percy's spell. But when the mills become the first spark in a violent radical insurgency, their budding connection faces a perilous trial beyond anything they could have imagined.

"A truly beautiful book."

~An Excerpt from 'Roses in Red Wax'~

The folly was built to resemble a ruined medieval castle. To one side stood an intact stone tower decorated with Gothic crosses. The top was enclosed by a sturdy looking parapet, suggesting it might be possible to climb up and look out over the countryside.

The place was deserted. No wind stirred. The slanting afternoon sun cast an aura of enchantment, and Jane could imagine she was wandering into the land of the faeries, like a girl from the stories Freya Riley—one of the castle maids and Mama’s closest friend—had told her as a child.

She was exploring a magical wood. There, just in front of her, were the ruins of an enchanted castle. A fortress where no one had set foot for hundreds of years . . . But perhaps someone was here, perhaps a princess dwelt at the top of the tower, forever a prisoner until her prince came to free her . . .

She shook herself. Silly. She was no longer a child, and this was just a folly. A fake. Built to lure patrons to the gardens. She would climb that tower, though. Perhaps she’d be able to see all the way back to the city.

A wooden staircase spiraled up the inside. Shafts of afternoon sunlight slanted through the mullioned windows, given shimmering, ethereal form by the specks of dust floating in the still air. The entire space was bathed in a warm golden glow and once again, she had to work to push young Janie’s flights of imagination away.

She’d made it halfway up when footsteps sounded below.

“Miss Stuart?”

Of course. It was him.

She said nothing, but she heard him begin to climb, the dull thud of his footfalls breaking the golden silence.

He rounded a corner, and she could just make him out—a silhouette hidden in shadow. The disheveled black hair. The angled planes of his face. The arch of his brow . . .

If there were a princess imprisoned in this tower, this was not the chaste prince come to rescue her and carry her away on a white horse. No, this man had arrived on a black stallion. He was the wickedly gorgeous villain who had come, not to rescue, but to ravish.

She was standing in a shaft of sunlight. He stopped short at the sight of her, staring unabashedly.

“Jane.” His voice lowered to that dark, sultry tone. She opened her mouth to respond but he held up a hand, commanding her silence. “Don’t. Move.”

She didn’t move, not so much because of his directive, but because she was caught. The shimmering beam of light held her. In time. In space. In this moment, he was no longer a scoundrel, but a devotee, and she was no longer the exiled bastard of a nobleman’s mistress, but a Lady, bathed in golden light. Powerful. She stood three stairs taller than him. His eyes worshiped her.

"'Roses in Red Wax' kept popping up in my feed and I reluctantly relented - unsure whether it would be worthwhile. I am happy for Facebook’s algorithms for once, as it was more than I expected... Mayberry artfully weaves a compelling story full of love, secrets, pain and hope that is as riveting as it is heart wrenchingly full of historic truths. I couldn’t put it down."
